DHA
Dihydroxyacetone
DHA is a colorless sugar that reacts with the amino acids present in the outermost layer of the skin, known as the stratum corneum. This reaction leads to the formation of a brown pigment called melanoidins, resulting in a temporary tan or bronzing effect on the skin. It is a 3- carbon sugar derived from plant sources such as sugar cane or sugar beets. It has the chemical formula C3H6O3 and is classified as a reducing sugar. In the production of selftanning products, DHA is typically derived from these natural sources or can be synthesized in a laboratory.
