Skinactive 4BR

Skinactive 4BR, also known as 4-Butylresorcinol, is a highly effective skin whitening and brightening agent that offers several benefits for the skin.

INCI: 4-Butylresorcinol

CAS: 18979-61-8

4-Butylresorcinol, also known as rucinol, is a brightening resorcinol derivative. It is a potent tyrosinase inhibitor that works in synergy with vitamin C to significantly improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation, particularly melasma. As a relatively new active in the cosmetics industry, there is not as much research available on 4-butylresorcinol compared to well-known brighteners like ascorbic acid and alpha arbutin. However, some promising studies have demonstrated rapid results in visibly evening skin tone, surpassing other brighteners on the market, including its relatives 4-hexylresorcinol and 4-phenylethylresorcinol.

It demonstrates the following effects:

Tyrosinase and Peroxidase Inhibition: Skinactive 4BR acts as a strong inhibitor of both tyrosinase and peroxidase enzymes. These enzymes play a crucial role in melanin synthesis, and by inhibiting their activity, 4-Butylresorcinol helps to prevent excessive melanin production and diminish skin pigmentation.

Skin Whitening and Toning: This ingredient is an effective skin whitening agent and toner. It helps to lighten the skin tone, even out discoloration, and improve overall skin brightness, resulting in a more radiant and even complexion.

Treatment for Pigmentation: Skinactive 4BR is particularly effective in treating pigmented skin conditions, such as chloasma, which refers to excessive pigmentation triggered by sunlight exposure. It helps to reduce the appearance of pigmentation and promote a more uniform skin tone.

DNA Protection: 4-Butylresorcinol demonstrates a strong protective effect against DNA damage induced by H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide). By shielding DNA from oxidative stress, it helps to maintain the health and integrity of skin cells.

Anti-Saccharification Effect: Studies have shown that Skinactive 4BR has an anti-saccharification effect. Saccharification refers to the non-enzymatic process of protein glycosylation, which can contribute to skin aging. By inhibiting this process, 4-Butylresorcinol helps to maintain a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance.

In the three processes of melanin synthesis, Skinactive 4BR exhibits a multifaceted approach to skin whitening. It not only inhibits tyrosinase activity but also demonstrates a synergistic effect in enhancing the overall whitening activity. Here’s how it works:

Pre-Melanin Synthesis: 4-Butylresorcinol interferes with the synthesis and glycosylation of tyrosinase, preventing the enzyme from being absorbed by melanosome, thus impeding the initial stages of melanin production.

During Melanin Synthesis: Skinactive 4BR acts as a competitive inhibitor of both tyrosinase and TRP1 enzymes, which are involved in melanin synthesis. By inhibiting their activity, it reduces the formation of by-products of melanin, leading to a lighter skin tone.

Post-Melanin Synthesis: After melanin synthesis, 4-Butylresorcinol improves the degradation of tyrosinase, inhibits the transfer of melanosome to keratinocytes, and promotes gentle exfoliation due to its fatty acid properties. This function is enhanced by the presence of fatty acids and helps regulate the degradation of tyrosinase.
